The Conservative Parliamentary China Group was formed with the Conservative Party leadership with a view to promoting debate and discussion on China.
To this end, we have held a series of events to discuss how best the government ought to respond to the challenge of China’s rise. Recent speakers include the heads of some of Britain’s most successful companies.
These include HSBC, Standard Chartered, Diageo, Prudential and Sir Martin Sorrell’s WPP (which has the largest share of China’s advertising market) as well as the UK Trade Minister, the Chinese Ambassador and the last governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten. Other speakers include Carrie Gracie, China Editor of the BBC and Kerry Brown, biographer of President Xi Jinping.
The rise of China and the shift in power from the West to the East is the biggest story of our time – and our aim is to seek to understand how best we can respond to the challenge of China – both politically and economically.
